Psychological Aspects of Living with Hyperhidrosis

Even though hyperhidrosis is physiological problem and not a psychological one patients who suffer from excessive hand sweating are confronted with a variety of psychological - social issues. Their ability to engage in simple handshakes, introduce themselves to new people are being hampered by this condition causing introversion and sometimes even get the label of being socially recluse. Also simple daily activities such as computer use, writing on paper, driving, use of electronics can be challenging. One issue that I hear repeatedly is the inability to physically interact with their loved ones without embarrassment. Comments like "I never was able to fully develop to my fullest ability" are commonly repeated to me.

In order to help in such situations the patient should first understand his condition and realize that this is something that is most likely caused by genetics and not because of anything they are doing. So the first step is to understand the problem, second to try some of the alternative hyperhidrosis treatments, and third if there is no improvement then the surgical approach should be considered after a thorough review is carried out with the appropriate medical professionals.

Please keep in mind that hyperhidrosis affects different patients in different ways. Make sure to consult your physician before anything is attributed to this problem.
