Is the hyperhidrosis surgery right for me?

This is a very difficult question to answer since we do not have any objective measurements to find out what the “level” of hyperhidrosis is. Unfortunately, there are no x-rays, blood tests, or any other objective means by which to determine if a patient is the ideal candidate. Through discussions that Dr. Reisfeld conducts with the patient, a clinical decision is made based on many key factors. Every case is unique, and Dr. Reisfeld takes time to thoroughly assess each and every case before making his clinical decisions.

Since the problem of hyperhidrosis is subjective it affects different individuals differently. Like in any other medical problem the impact or the gravity of the situation affects patients each in a different way. Trying to sum it up in a very simple way is to say those with moderate to severe cases of hyperhidrosis suffer enough to persuade them to look for some solution. As we emphasize within this website, the first step in the process is to talk with someone who understands and knows about hyperhidrosis and the available options and then to try some conservative measures first. If conservative measures do not show any help then the surgical option, which is outlines on this website, should be considered.

Just to summarize things it should be remembered that the clinical evaluation by the surgeon, even when it is done via telephone, is a must a necessary step in starting the process. Second to the clinical evaluation are the obvious steps of insurance coverage, payment, etc. Please remember to have an evaluation by Dr. Reisfeld before other steps are taken. Dr. Reisfeld is authority on the topic of hyperhidrosis and can perform an expert evaluation to determine if the surgery is right for you.

I am a 63 year old female who has suffered in secret with Hyperhidrosis since the age of 5. I can’t emphasize how difficult it has been to deal with this medical condition alone throughout my life because of my feelings of shame and being embarrassed. I have tried in the last few years to discuss this with several physicians but all have attributed a traumatic psychological experience in my childhood to my hyperhidrosis. They all were flippant and seemed uninterested in my condition which only added to my shame and not wanting to talk about it. I feel for each and everyone of your patients adults and children alike. It is so detrimental and I’m sure has contributed to depression, drugs, social isolation and suicide, with this condition not known to be the main contributor, I’ve been there. Thank you all from the bottom of heart for this website for all the time and work being dedicated to help us.
